Chance for Children in Tameside to Become Published Authors

Young writers are invited to submit short stories with the chance to become published authors as Tameside Libraries launch their short story competition.

Following the success of a previous competition, the challenge returns with a festive theme, Winter Wonderland, and is open to residents aged seven to 16.

From festive tales and snowy adventures to chilling ghost stories and merry murder mysteries, young writers are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild. Entries can be submitted in a variety of formats, including short stories, poems, comics and videos.

The age categories are:

  • Seven to 11 years old
  • 12 to 16 years old

The winner in each age category will receive the exciting opportunity to become a published author, with their work released as an e-book on BorrowBox. This means library members across Greater Manchester will be able to read and enjoy the winning stories.

The maximum wordcount is 500 words. Entries open Monday 2 November 2026 and close Friday 4 December 2026.

The winning entries will be announced by the middle of December, just in time for Christmas.

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley said: “What a fantastic opportunity for our younger residents who love reading and storytelling. The competition is a wonderful way to inspire creativity and encourage young people to explore their imaginations, with the chance to become a published author! I would encourage anyone who is interested to get involved.”
