For Sunshine Steel, the music never stops, even if the walls around us have disappeared. We are a tight-knit steel band of five to six players, bringing calypso sounds to Manchester and surrounding area. However, we are currently facing a crisis that threatens our rhythm. We have been made homeless from our storage and practice space.
The Problem
We previously operated out of a modest garden room, measuring just 5×5 meters. While small, it was perfectly suited for our ensemble of 15 pans. It was warm, dry, and secure. Unfortunately, circumstances have changed, and we are now without a base.
Who We Are
We are not just musicians, we are community players. Our members travel from across Cheshire and Manchester to rehearse, and we regularly perform for charities in Handforth and Levenshulme. We firmly believe in “singing for our supper” and we are more than happy to trade our services for a roof over our heads.
If you or your organisation have a spare room, garage, or outbuilding that we can use, we don’t expect charity (though we joyfully welcome it!). We are available for private hire and would be thrilled to pay our way by providing live music for your events, festivals, or parties. We have an extended and polished repertoire of traditional steel drum melodies, pop and some unexpected favourites too (Godfather theme tune anyone?). And we love a good Christmas Concert, combining carols and chart hits.
We are looking for a space that is:
- Warm and dry (to protect the steel pans)
- Secure
- Accessible for players traveling from different postcodes
Can you help us find a new home? If you have a space, or know someone who does, please get in touch. We are ready to bring the sunshine to your doorstep in return!
