Trafford’s African and Caribbean Communities Celebrated in New Exhibition

The rich stories and experiences of Trafford’s African and Caribbean communities are being celebrated in a new exhibition as part of Black History Month.

Trafford Council’s Local Studies & Archive Centre in Sale is hosting the exhibition, which has been developed with members of the Trafford African & Caribbean Over 50s Club (TAC). The exhibition – Our Stories, Our Legacy – helps amplify Caribbean voices, strengthen a sense of belonging and ensure these important stories form part of Trafford’s local heritage.

The exhibition includes a myriad of personal accounts and collective histories collated by Trafford Local Studies & Archives and local historian Linford Sweeney. Photographer Sonya Smith has produced insightful images as a contemporary document of TAC as a vibrant and proud Trafford community group. The exhibition also includes Local filmmaker Tony Reeves’ documentary on The Life and Work of Whit Stennett.

Cllr Eve Parker, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said: “It’s always great to see the lives of people in our communities documented. This is a vibrant exhibition and I urge everyone to have a look round and see the amazing contributions to Trafford made by our African and Caribbean residents.”

The project forms part of a month-long exhibition at the Trafford Local Studies & Archives Centre, based at Sale Library, and runs from 5 – 31 October.

Cllr Ross, Trafford Council leader, said: “What’s clear, looking at the exhibition is just what a contribution Trafford’s African and Caribbean communities have made – and continue to make.

“This year’s theme of Black History Month is Honouring Our Communities. And we are privileged to have been honoured for so many years now from the Windrush generation through to today’s generation.

“We have fantastic contributors in our faith communities, our sporting communities, our social communities, our urban communities – I’m delighted that Trafford is such a diverse place to live, enriched by the fantastic contributions made by our African and Caribbean communities.”

Inspiring Black History Month displays also take pride of place in Trafford’s libraries from this week.
