A group of talented young singers from Primrose Hill Primary School have been given a special civic honour after impressing the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford during an unforgettable performance celebrating the city’s 100th birthday.
The pupils were among hundreds of young performers taking part in This Is Our Salford: Salford Centenary Concert at Lowry, organised by Salford’s Music and Performing Arts Service (MAPAS), for children undertaking Whole Class Instrumental Tuition. Their heartfelt rendition of ‘This Is Our Salford’ so impressed the Ceremonial Mayor that he invited the children to perform again, followed by tea and cake – this time at Salford Civic Centre.
The Ceremonial Mayor of Salford and Mayoress welcomed the pupils after being inspired by their recent performance, which also gave the opportunity for the children to experience the civic heart of the city and celebrate their role in a landmark year for Salford.
The specially commissioned song, written by acclaimed Salford composer Mark Winstanley, celebrates the city’s rich history, diverse communities and bright future. Created especially for the children of Salford as part of the Centenary celebrations, the uplifting anthem reflects local pride and encourages young people to celebrate the place they call home.
The song, whose chorus celebrates Salford as a city with “strength in history” and “shining a light to the rest of the world”, has quickly become a defining musical moment of the Centenary celebrations.
The Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Councillor Robin Garrido said: “All the children who performed, including those from Primrose Hill Primary School gave a truly memorable performance at the MAPAS Centenary Concert. Their enthusiasm, confidence and pride in Salford shone through every word of the song. I wanted to thank them personally by inviting them to the Civic Centre to perform once more and to enjoy tea with the Mayoress. They are wonderful ambassadors for our city and represent the bright future of Salford.”
The performance is another highlight in Salford’s Centenary year, with communities across the city coming together to celebrate 100 years since Salford was granted city status.
