Women’s and girls’ rugby is setting new milestones each week, and this was evident on Sunday 3 May when over 100 players gathered at Bradwall Road, home of Sandbach RUFC, for the Sandbach Women’s and Girls’ rugby festival.
Players representing clubs from Sandbach RUFC, Congleton RUFC, Burley RUFC, Winnington Park RFC, Ashbourne RUFC, Stoke-on-Trent RFC, Broughton Park FC, Firwood Waterloo RFC, Glossop RUFC, Macclesfield RUFC, Sirens Women and Bury RUFC took part.
There were four full Under 14 teams battling it out across six games. Three women’s teams competed in three competitive matches, while 14 touch rugby players showcased their energy and skill on the field. All the action was overseen by an all-female refereeing team.
Alongside the on-field action, players from Sandbach’s girls’ team raised over £100 in cake and raffle ticket sales to go towards their kit fund.
Commenting on the day, Ros Wiggins, Sandbach’s Head of Women and Girls Rugby, said: “A huge thank you to all the players and especially the referee team. It was so good to see Sandbach as a hub for women’s and girls’ rugby. There is much more to come.”
Plans are already being drawn up to make the festival even bigger and better next season.
